What is the difference between a fuse box and a distribution board in a commercial building?
In commercial buildings, the term “distribution board” (or DB) is more commonly used than fuse box – though both refer to the panel that distributes electrical supply to individual circuits. Modern commercial distribution boards use miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual current devices (RCDs) rather than fuses, providing better protection and easier fault isolation. When should a commercial fuse box or distribution board be replaced?
A commercial distribution board should be replaced when it contains rewireable fuses rather than MCBs, when it does not provide adequate RCD protection, when it is fully loaded with no spare ways for additional circuits, when it has been identified as faulty or non-compliant on an EICR, or when the building’s electrical load has grown beyond the capacity of the existing board. Can a commercial fuse box be replaced without disrupting the whole building?
Yes. With careful planning, a commercial distribution board can often be replaced with minimal disruption – we typically programme the board replacement for a period of low occupancy or outside operating hours and restore power circuit by circuit as the new board is connected.
